Learn Your Rights In California

In March 2014, the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office debuted the Know Your Rights project called L.Y.R.I.C. (Learn Your Rights In California). The focus of the program is to educate students about their Constitutional rights and to practice how students can interact with police safely while exercising their rights.

Our Office has formed teams of two attorneys to go to local high schools to give this one-time interactive presentation to a classroom sizegroup of students. During the presentation, we discuss casual encounters, detentions, searches and arrests by police officers.

In 2015, L.Y.R.I.C. was awarded the Achievement Award by the National Association of Counties, and the Public Defender Program of the Year Award from the California Public Defenders Association.

Please contact us at LYRIC@acgov.org if you are interested in scheduling a presentation. We look forward to hearing from you!
